This is my first ever official What's the Point? . Being the first i'll let you know that this will be the only column to be written on a Sunday. From now on it will be written on Thursdays.
As promised i'll take a good look at what's going on with the women division on WWE, ECW, and, at some point, TNA.
Now let's go with the Feminine title.
I don't see what's point on having any of the current women as champion, other than Mickie James, formely known as Alexis Laree. Alltough she can't seem to get rid of the crazy gimmick she has, she's the only one that can in my opinion work a match as she has charisma, and some overness.
So you're probably guessing what's the problem with the division...well it has two major problems the way i see it: too much focus on Lita and Trish Stratus while they were on the division, and the release of girls with lots of potential: Christy Hemme, Jazz, Gail Kim, and please correct me if i'm wrong, Stacy Keibler.
The truth is both Stratus and Lita were awesome, we got to give them that. But that left lots of people without a chance to shine.
I looked at the rosters of WWE and what i saw made me laugh. Torrie Wilson is average, but she can't do a thing as she's the valet of Carlito. Michelle McCool wanted to be a wrestler, and suposedly she has some skills, but she's sinking into oblivion. Ashley sucks, she's not even pretty and has absolutely no wrestling skills whatsoever, she's the worst winner of the diva challenge ever! Don't get me started on Kelly Kelly and Layla, or Cherry, neither one does anything worth seeing, Kelly and Layla can't even work a coreography, let alone a match. Brooke on the other hand is no stranger as she wrestled for a while on DSW. Sharmell Sullivan is the tipical valet, and so is Candice. Maryse in unknown to me as i'm not sure about her, but i'm guessing another pretty face that can't even talk.
So i mentioned ten girls that get to do what almost everyone does in the bussiness: valet for someone. What's the point on having these girls on TV? Well i guess they do Bikini Contests...oh and sometimes shoot t-shirts to the audience, until they get interrupted by the point of the segment: some guy terrorising them.
Now i'm gonna get to the point on the released ones that had skills or wanted them: Hemme. She got some matches and truly wanted to improve, she had charisma, the fans liked her...and then she was released. Gail Kim. A good follower of Stratus and Lita concerning skills, she even got the title for a while, and i liked her a lot. Got released. Jazz. She had skills as well and could bode well with the return of ECW but got released, she could have been the next champion. Stacy Keibler. I really enjoyed her, and those kicks but left. Molly Holly. For God's sake she even got her head shaved, but i understand the need to change.
Currently some other great women include Tracy Brooks, currently at TNA, and April Hunter. These are amongst the most hardworking women in the bussiness.
On the other hand there is one good wrestler on Smackdown, if i'm not mistaken. Jillian Hall, has it all: skills, TV coverage, and a certain charisma, but is she being overlooked? You're damn right she is!! Sure, she's not pretty, but give her a chance and she could turn out great.
By now you're probably wondering why haven't i mentioned some other girls like Maria, Melina on a bigger focus, Ariel or Trinity. That's exactly where i wanted to get. These four ladies could get bigger. Maria is developing greatly these days, and i think it's very unfair that she doesn't have some feud for the title. The dumb gimmick is getting kinda boring by now, and for the time she's been in the company...she deserves a push so people like her as a more serious persona. She, like Jillian, has it: TV time, above average matches, in my humble opinion, and lots and lots of charisma, and some nice mic skill.
Melina Perez has skills and a good heel gimmick and she deserves the air time she's getting, she's been on WWE for years now. The championship does not surprise me, but i feel that Alexis, ups sorry i meant Mickie, is more important right know, as she fought against Trish and lita.
Ariel has skills, but the gimmick is killing her, she could go back as Cle-Ho-Patra, it's more sexy and gets more attention. She deserves a feud to get a push. Yes Ariel is not a fanged freak that came since ECW got back, she was in OVW for some time, and fought in the Indy circuit against the likes of Tracy Brooks and April Hunter.
And then we have Trinity...she was on TNA before, and has good skills but i don't think she'll get much attention to my disapointment.
I almost forgot about Victoria!! Well i guess there's nothing new to give her to get some attention, she'll bodyguard Melina and then fade away despite having huge wrestling skills.
I guess the Women Division should get more attention, but i have a feeling that WWE wants women just to be valets. Yes it's sad, but looking at how things are right now, i don't see what are we going to get from women...I mean, Melina and Mickie will probably feud for some months with the help of Victoria and someother girl. They guessed that Ashley won't ever be good, so they are going to book a match between Mickie James vs Melina. Melina is better at staying with the title, so i'm guessing that she'll have a run with the title, with other heel girls backing her up.
On a side note i can't help but talk about some girls on OVW and DSW. There's currently Five names that get my attention: Katie Lea, Roni Jonah, Krissy Vayne, Shantelle Taylor, Beth Phoenix and Milena Roucka. Ok, so there are six names, sue me!
Beth Phoenix will be the next girl to be promoted to the main roster i believe, because of that short-lived angle she got involved with Mickie James, Trish had called her. She's actually a great wrestler!! But only time will tell
Roni Jonah is going to get some TV time soon i think, not much can be said other than she's a pretty face, and can work some matches.
Milena Roucka is one hot smoking girl, and will be the next top diva in WWE!!!
I'm surprised Katie Lea isn't on any of the major rosters or fighting for the championship. She has already given good performances, and is on my opinion the best female on the development lands.
Krissy Vaine has great mic skills as she's the GM of DSW. And could be given a bigger position on the company.
And last but not least there's Shantelle Taylor, who's working average, but i expect her to improve a whole lot in the near future.
These girls mentioned above will be the future divas and women champions.
Right now the women division is just a mess, and it will continue to be a mess until they give the girls some actual personas. I see talent on WWE, i also see some horrible girls, and i dont' mean appearence! It needs an adjustment. For the time being expect the Melina/Mickie feud to go on, i sure hope WWE surprises me!!
Focus and train the girls, and give them some air time!
