More than a year ago i decided to write a weekly column concerning wrestling and what was going around in the wrestling circuit. After two editions i canceled the entire thing probably due to not having the time. Then when CRF came back i believe i wrote about continuing the column, but it would go nowhere.
Well...no more!
I will graduate within a month or so and then enroll in a Master's Degree, in doing so I'll have more time to do all sorts of things, and this time I'm committed to give this column the regularity it deserves. There will be a column every two weeks, that way I'll have alot of subjects to cover.
Let's say this is the third edition and begin with a big shocker and talk about two issues that have been forgotten by many writers.
I don't know if you're aware of the Kurt Angle situation, but that is the biggest shock since the Benoit situation in my eyes.
Last week, if I'm not mistaken, Kurt Angle was stalking his girlfriend, Raka Khan, after he smacked her around and she ordered a restraining order on him. Apparently he also stole her cell phone. Not only that he was driving without a license and had performance enhancing drugs with him in the truck of the car. She called the cops and he was taken to the station. He is still awaiting trial. Forgive me if there is something wrong or if I'm omitting any info, I'm writing this as i remember reading.
Sunday there was a TNA PPV and Angle was main eventing as the champion. It would appear that the direction of the company would do something concerning the news surrounding it's main star, but they did nothing and let him remain as their top champion.
Now what was the point in doing that?!
As of late there has been real drama in TNA, and the company has been trying to solve it's issues, but after getting a huge black eye thanks to Angle one would assume they would strip the title from Angle and give it to either Morgan or Sting. Not that i like either performer but it would be the obvious thing to do. I don't know exactly why they made that decision, maybe they thought they could trick everybody and have an upset with Angle remaining the champion, but i think it's clear that it's hurts them more that it helps. Right now TNA's name is associated with dirt, something i wouldn't want if i was trying to compete with WWE.
What would be the logical step?
Suspending Angle and allowing him time to first clear his name and solve his personal problems. Clearly Angle is not in a normal state. Having somebody like him as their main champion is basically saying that what he did was cool. That's not the kind of image you want to pass. Suspension is the least they could do, if Angle was working for me i would fire him on the spot. I'm going to stop writing about this now, since i want more information. On my next column I'll finish talking about this drama. TNA has to be pretty stupid if they think the fans will not learn about this.
Ok, now let's talk about something different: Comedy.
What's the point?
Since i don't follow WWE anymore i have been entertaining myself with Indy stuff and there was something that always bugged me. A long time ago i watched a match between Sakura Hirota against Mayumi Ozaki, it was Hirota's retirement match. I laughed quite a bit with that match and learned to enjoy comedy matches. Btw i would recommend checking her matches on youtube, there's quite the fair share.
One of the main problems with wrestling is that it takes itself too seriously. Whenever i was watching WWE there would be comedy, but it's comedy would always revolve around angles. Sure there was some funny segment here and there, but the dedication to comedy would always derive on some storyline. On one hand it's understandable, we're talking about the biggest wrestling promotion on the planet, so storylines have to be serious and there has to be drama, but one part of me still thinks that wrestling is just too serious and i need a break. This need would take me to CHIKARA and to Pro Wrestling Guerrila, promotions that focus on the funny aspect of wrestling. They don't take themselves too seriously and that fits my laid back attitude.
Comedy matches aren't that difficult to book, in my view that is.
But my quest for funny would not stop there, i would go to Japan, via Youtube obviously, and watch DDT and 666 and be amazed. I like funny matches, they are relaxing. Let me give you some examples of the stuff i saw: a match between a table and a ladder, Mokujin Ken (a guy in a box wrestling), insanity! President Ramu is a little girl that is possessed by a demon and chokeslams big heavyweights, Ebessan is extremely funny and so is Kikutaru. Back in the US we can find El Generico, Chuck Taylor and many, many more. Anyone can be funny in the right circumstances...so why not try it more?
There was a time when Charlie Haas was imitating past wrestlers, that was funny, that was interesting, that was something that could have progressed much more. And now i read about DX coming back for another match or something like that and think: is this really the best they can do? Having two guys making the same jokes over and over and over again? And that's not even the real problem, the real problem is they don't take full advantage of the situation.
People watch wrestling because they want to be entertained, comedy is the grandfather of entertainment and something that has yet to truly surface in major corporations.
Oh and i almost forgot to mention what probably is the best benefit of comedy matches: no injuries. This would sound great to the man who has Santina wrestling on his shows. While probably a great complement to more dramatic action comedy will remain in obscurity, only promoted by the federations i mentioned earlier and a few others...and that is a shame.
I was thinking about writing about another issue but i think I'll leave that for another edition with the remaining what has to be written about Kurt "I destroyed my career" Angle.
For next edition: Wrestling and soap operas, Kurt Angle saga, and probably one more topic.
Tell me what you think about all this, if you like it or hate it and why. Yeah i know this article could have been better and much more extensive, it will be so next edition.
